A Few Words About KG2
In KG we focus on developing the child as whole with the emphasis on literacy, numeracy, PHSE, expressive arts and design, understanding of the world and Physical education. We believe in laying a good foundation to prepare the children for their academic and personal development. We believe that the classroom should a fun, safe and stimulating environment. As members of staff we believe in being positive role models who bring out the best in the children. Together, with our TA’s we are here to support the children on their learning journey.
The Kindergarten years provide the foundation for all later learning and the development of life skills. Our overall aim is to nurture the cognitive, social, emotional and physical development of the children in our care and to prepare them for schooling with the right attitudes, values, and habits ultimately, to help your child to become a capable, independent, lifelong learner.
The children in the Kindergarten Department follow the English National Curriculum Foundation Programme, leading to the implementation of the National Curriculum proper in Grade 1. It emphasizes a holistic approach to child development. The methodology followed is based on a bilingual (English/Arabic), integrated thematic approach. To give the students the best opportunity to develop their Literacy skills, the Jolly Phonics Programme is followed.
School Hours :
The day for the KG children is from 7.15am to 12.30pm. Children who arrive earlier, will be supervised in a waiting area before going to their classes at 7.15. Any child arriving at school earlier should be supervised by an adult or by an older sibling until the Teacher on duty arrives. Please bring your child to school no later than 7.25am
Please do not leave your child alone or unsupervised in the corridor before 7.15am.
Collecting Your Child Before 12.30pm:
Please note that the KG doors will be locked until 12.30pm. If you wish to pick up your child earlier than the official departure time, please obtain a Permission Form from Reception before arriving at the classroom. A grace period for collecting your child will be given until 12.45pm, thereafter, charges for after care will apply.
Arrival and Departure by School Bus:
If you wish to have your children bussed to and from school, kindly make arrangements with our Registrar and Administration staff at the school office. Bus children will leave at 12:20.
Parent – Teacher Communication:
Kindergarten will be implementing and using a wonderful online communication system called ‘Class Dojo’. This will be used as the main method for Parent/Teacher communication. This app can be downloaded onto your smart phone and this allows you to view pictures of various activities that happen throughout the school year. Also, it allows you to communicate any urgent messages that you might have, view the ‘Topic of the week’ note and any other relevant information and it is a way to monitor your child’s behaviour.
Throughout the year there are several scheduled Parent/Teacher afternoons. Dates of these will be communicated to you.
Any appointments to see the teacher can be made through the Administration staff. These appointments will need to be held outside of teaching hours.
Rested and Refreshed:
Please ensure an early bedtime for your child. A range of 8 to 10 hours uninterrupted sleep per night is recommended.
Health and Absence from School:
It is common for young children to have minor illnesses when they first enter school. A general rule of thumb to determine whether your child should stay at home is the presence of a fever.
To avoid the spreading of germs, kindly teach your child how to use a tissue to blow his/her nose, how to cover his/her mouth when coughing or sneezing, how to wash his/her hands thoroughly and how to use the toilet independently.
Send a note, or phone the school (24565550) to inform the teacher of any absence from school. If you intend taking you child out of school for more than three days, please notify the school beforehand.
Our school nurse is available in the Kindergarten, if your child has any special health needs.
Snack and Meals:
The children are required to bring a healthy snack packed in a lunch box to school every day. Nutritious food is important to support the intellectual development of your child. Small partitions of dried or fresh fruit, vegetables, salads, yoghurt, sandwiches, meat, cheese, rice and pasta will meet your child’s energy requirements. Please include a water bottle every day. Additionally, children can have unflavored milk with their snack.
Please do not send the following foods: sweets, chocolate, potato crisps, french fries, soft drinks,
cakes, pizza, chewing gum or flavoured milk drinks. For health and safety reasons, NUTS OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING PEANUTS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN SCHOOL.
We encourage children to eat their own food and do not allow any sharing of food. If your child is allergic to any foods, please inform the Class Teacher promptly.
KG children have a compulsory uniform. This will consist of a pair of blue shorts and a white t-shirt with the Muscat International School logo on it. This can be purchased from the uniform shop in the administration department. Please send your child to school with sports shoes/trainers to avoid injuries at playtime. Unless if your child can tie his/her own shoelaces, shoes with Velcro ties should be worn. Also, please send an extra set of clothes to school that will be kept in your child’s class, in case your child needs a change of clothes.
Physical Education :
All the KG children are encouraged to wear the correct PE uniform, with sports shoes, on the day he/she has PE in the Gymnasium.
For new children who have older siblings in the school they will be placed in the same House as them. For other new children, we will inform you which House your child will be in, so that you can buy the correct PE uniform from the school store located on the basement floor. This is open from 7.30 to 8am, 9.10 to 9.40am and 9.50 to 10.20am each day.
We believe that when parents and teachers work together in the early years, the results have a positive impact on the child’s learning and development. We encourage all our parents to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Home and School Communication
Good parent/teacher communication is vital to the education process. If you have a question, concern or complaint parents should first address matters of concern with the class teacher. If a satisfactory solution to any issue is not established then the matter should be raised with the Grade Leader and then to the Head of Primary.
Inquiries about administration, accounts, buses or transferring schools should be directed to the Reception staff in the Front Office.
The following avenues for communication between parents and school are in place:
• All pupils have a Home School Diary
• Class blogs and online portfolios
• Open classroom events
• School and class newsletters
• Various reporting formats, including parent/student/teacher conferences
• Parent information evenings
• The school website (Mis.edu.om)
• SMS messages to parents advising of important events
Contacting Teachers :
The home-school diary is the first method of communication between teacher and parent.
• Teachers will happily discuss small issues with parents in the playground at the beginning and end of the school day. If there are larger issues to discuss, we encourage parents to make an appointment to see the teacher at another time.
• Please phone the school if you wish to arrange a meeting with a teacher during the school day.
• All visitors to school must report to the Reception Desk first and collect a visitor’s badge.
• Teachers are not permitted to give out phone numbers or email addresses, so please don’t ask for them.
Contact with the Primary Leadership Team :
The Head of Primary deals with the operational aspects of the Primary section. Class teachers and Grade Leaders are the main channel of communication for any issues involving students.
Direct contact with the Grade Leaders should occur in any one of the following circumstances:
• you are unsatisfied with your discussion with the teacher regarding the matter concerning your child
• you feel the matter concerning your child is serious enough to warrant immediate action by the administration (i.e. by-passing stage one above)
• your concern is not with the normal classroom learning situation, but is of a general curricular, behavioral or school organizational nature
• you feel there is a sudden emergency situation and contact must be made
Should the need arise the Grade Leader will refer the parental concern to the Head of Primary
Primary newsletters are published monthly and will be accessible in the Primary section of the website. It is available in Arabic and English. In addition to this Primary and grade notices are published on a weekly basis. Grade newsletters are sent home regularly, usually at the beginning of each unit. Please check your child’s bag for letters on a daily basis as important information may be sent out as an individual letter rather than awaiting inclusion in a newsletter.
Children in KG 0 to Grade 6 have Home School Communication Diary in which important information about the work being done in class, behaviour and homework is recorded. There is also a reading record in this book, where students and/or parents can keep track of reading which is done at home. Please remember to check the home-school diary daily and sign it weekly. Please check your child’s bag regularly to make sure they have given you any notes
The school operates a text messaging service to advise of special events. Please ensure that we have your correct mobile number in our records.
Helping at Home:
Home learning tasks play an important part in consolidating your child’s attainment and developing good learning habits. Each week your child will receive a homework sheet that lists the objectives the class is currently focusing on and sometimes tasks related to these. The expectations for home learning differ between Grades as the children get older. Please speak to your child’s class teacher for Grade specific information. We recommend that all children read daily.
